Miscanthus - the plant

  • also called Chinese Reed or Elephant Grass
  • perennial grass type
  • C4 - plant (such as corn): high yields result from the plant's capacity to assimilate and generate biomass even at high temperatures
  • permanent crop: sprouts from rootstocks all year long - thus requires pricking out of rootstocks only once - saves cost for soil cultivation, seeds, and pest management

  • China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan

Habitat Requirements

  • cultivation in corn-growing locations at up to 700m above sea level
  • soil structure: water-bearing arable farmland with good air drainage
  • at least 700 mm annual rainfall
